Painted from 26th April - 7th June, 2012

Size: 20 inches x 16 inches

Oils on canvas

This painting is based on a black and white photograph taken most likely in 1940 but could be a year later. My paternal grandfather Daniel T McCarthy is sitting on his newly bought Fordson tractor. The orange model was made from 1939 - 42. Behind the tractor is a plough. Much of the ploughs in Ireland were still horse drawn at that time. My grandfather was a forward thinking man in terms of farm machinery and this tractor was the very latest in tractor technology at that time. I didn't know him, he died in 1973.
The original photograph had a glare that obscured much of the engine detail. Also the very front of the tractor was cut off in the photo, so I had to consult the original negative plate to get it right. So I spent WAY too much time on this. I faded the colour in the sky to make it look colder and blurred the detail in the ground and background so the tractor stands out more.

Ooops. I missed this one. You need to give me a heads up when you put up a new piece,Niall.
I tend to accumulate thousands of deviations. I don't like to delelte any til I've had a chance to go thru them.
It can be a daunting task. This is fantastic,Niall. I love the details. One of your best,I'd say.;p

I love all the detail you put on the tractor! I love the reflections, too. Great job!

The way you captured the texture of the earth on the wheel and in the furrows by contrasting light and shade is wonderful. I also like the reflections on the surface of the tractor, the make it look convincingly metallic.

This looks great, Niall. Great work with your grandfather's figure and tractor.

A few things I would have liked a little different: The foreground a little blurred, to give the picture depth and focus. And I think the sky is a little too white, overwhelmingly so. You could keep the 'cold' effect by choosing greys rather than blues, I think.

That's all! Other than that, really an eye-grabbing picture. Well done!
